Poseidon (2006)

Well, the internet has been down all day here (I am writing this with my phone internet btw) so we decided to scour the movie shelves for anything that sounded interesting tonight.  This meant I was happy I may not have to write a review for an already seen movie.  Obviously you are reading this so that was not the case.  I happened to stumble across Poseidon here, and it was unopened and unwatched by us.  Poseidon has a pretty amazing cast with names such as Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss.  Some smaller name people were in the film such as Jacinda Barrett, Emmy Rossum, and Jimmy Bennett.

I was surprised by the acting for the most part in this film.  I had not heard much about this movie so I was initially surprised by the big names it held.  There was only one performance I was not real happy with and that was by Kevin Dillon.  Let's cut him some slack however, he is a Dillon.

Storyline was not on the same level as acting.  The overall concept of the story was pretty solid; a cruise ship out to sea is struck by an unpredictable "rouge wave".  Not bad, that could go many interesting directions.  The script went a pretty obvious route and followed our characters attempts at survival and escape.  This is where the film went from good concept to bad result.  There were many parts in the film that were just plain stupid.  Explosions from things that should never explode, windows that bust open when they were holding just fine and there was no change that should have resulted in them busting, and some just plain old holes in the script.

Filming was as good as it could be for most of the movie taking place in the bowels of a ship.  The parts that were able to have some killer looks did look fairly well.  The ocean with the wave coming was very realistic, and the boat reactions to the wave and movements all seemed appropriately realistic.

Poseidon is receiving a 3 star review from me loyal readers.  Good acting paired with good concept keep this film with some unrealistic parts from sinking.  Haha, get it?  SINKING!  I know, clever.  Ciao for now and see you for the next review!
