Tron

Good afternoon!  Wow, that was a long weekend.  I watched two movies, sorry I did not get reviews up sooner.  For this review, it was 1982's Tron.  Tron is one of those "cult classics" that developed a great following.  It had captured me as well, as one of my favorite older geeky technology movies.  However, upon an almost 30 year after release watching I was not as impressed.  Tron receives a 3 star review.  I will rate upon acting and script, filming and enjoyability.

Acting is probably the main reason for the drop to 3 stars.  Upon revisiting Tron a few years after my last viewing, I was not impressed.  Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner and Cindy Morgan round out the main characters in this first round of the Tron films.  While casting was not bad as all fit their parts quite nicely, acting on the whole was very bad.  Part of this is due to script however, as the dialog was hideous.  The interactions and talking was very boring, and even when they were talking it was not catching.  Jeff Bridges character Kevin Flynn seemed as if he was on drugs.  He was bouncing around everywhere, and acting like a spaz.  David's character Ed Dillinger was worse yet.  He was monotone, boring and just plain annoying.  As I said earlier, the characters were cast well, the dialog is the main problem.

Filming was, on a pro rated scale, not that bad.  If you take into account what other movies are like around the same time period, Tron actually pushed the box.  Imagination and animation were good as well.  I don't recall a movie that went this in depth about living in a computer world before Tron.  Ideas may have been there, and movies may have touched on it, but not to this extent.  Tron, in  my opinion, was a pioneer into this type of film and paved the way for some extremely good movies such as the Matrix series.

Enjoyability, partially because of nostalgia, was still great.  Being somewhat of a computer geek myself this movie has always been right up my alley.  The concept of this film is still amazing and they did translate this into the special effects and filming.

Filming and enjoyability really bring this film up.  However, scripting really brings it down resulting in a 3 star overall.  It is still worth checking out if you have not seen it, and it is a good refresher if you have not seen it in a while and are considering watching the new installment, Tron Legacy.  As always, leave comments, follow my blog above and share to your favorite social networking site below.  Ciao for now, and see you for the next review!

  2. Thanks for the comment Gabby! Figures Jarred would want to see the new one as bad as I did. My guess was that it is a Disney film so it was just vaulted and that is why it was unavailable. We found it at a normal video rental store.
