Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Good evening!  Tonight's review is Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.  The sequel to the 2006 film Night at the Museum was actually quite impressive.  With an extremely hard to improve upon original, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian did just that.  I am giving it a greatly deserved 4 star rating.  If you have not seen the first of the films, do so before seeing this one.

Tonight I will be reviewing on the categories of acting, storyline, filming and enjoyability.  Lets get starting with acting.  With key cast returning from the original, new characters added were amazing.  Amy Adams and Hank Azaria shined along with all the original cast, and everyone flowed quite well together.  I can't say enough about Amy and Hank in this movie, I was truely impressed.  Hank was able to have a serious role with his character, but managed to keep it light and very funny.  Amy's character was stearn, tough, loving and very stubborn.  They both acted extremely well, and have seemed in their respective careers to be steadily getting better and better.  The entire cast in fact was able to give amazing performances.  There were also some nice small roles filled by some new fresh actors up and coming.  Ed Helms and Jonah Hill were both excellent choices. If the rating were based upon acting only, I would have given 5 stars.  My hat's off to the entire crew, acting and behind the scenes, as the final product turned out amazing.

**Spoilers below**

The storyline was incredible.  Picking up a few years after the original ended, Larry now owns an inventing company that has exploded.  He goes back to the museum for a nostalgic visit only to find they are packing up all the exhibits to put them in archives to make way for new holographic technology exhibits.  On the way to storage he gets a call from Owen Wilson's character only to find they are up to their usual shenanigans and in trouble again.  Off goes Larry to attempt to save the day.  We are introduced to the two new main characters in the sequel, Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart and Hank Azaria as Kahmunrah. Kahmunrah is the big brother of the character Ahkmenrah from the first installment.  Everything works amazing, and there are no holes in the story.

Filming was also incredible.  The special effect and the pure imagination captured and edited into the final product was some of the best I have seen in a while.  Battle scenes were realistic, all of the CGI and green screen scenes were flawless.  Watching some of the special features really lets you in on how much work they really had to do to get the movie ready to become the final product.  Some of the filming angles during certain parts of the movie were very interesting, especially while Larry and Amelia were flying around in the Wright Brother's first successfully airplane dodging in and out of constant hazards around the Air and Space Museum.

Enjoyability was top notch.  There were subtle digs and humor inserted strategically.  The film was entertaining from start to end.  One of my favorite scenes was with Kahmunrah dealing with Oscar the Grouch and Darth Vader applying to acceptance into the gang to take over the world.  All in all this was a well rounded movie, with a hard to live up to prequel, that held its own and did, and added to, the justice of the original.  Receiving a very solid 4 star rating, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is well worth checking out.  It was serious yet entertaining, deep yet easy to follow, and just an incredible way to learn history in a very fun way.
