Tron: Legacy

The second review from this weekend is a first for this blog, an opening weekend box office flick Tron: Legacy.  Showing up 28 years after the original Tron was made, this film does so along side very few others.  I was glad that I did a refresher viewing of Tron before going, it helped to remember some of the details and inner workings of the original.  Wow!  The second installment is 100 times better than the original.  Even if you didn't enjoy the first, this is a necessity to see.  Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleinter are back from the original giving exponentially better performances.  They are joined by Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde filling out the remainder of the main characters.  Only the second film to do so in my blog, Tron: Legacy receives a 5 star review.  I will rate on acting and casting, filming, script and enjoyability.

Tron

Good afternoon!  Wow, that was a long weekend.  I watched two movies, sorry I did not get reviews up sooner.  For this review, it was 1982's Tron.  Tron is one of those "cult classics" that developed a great following.  It had captured me as well, as one of my favorite older geeky technology movies.  However, upon an almost 30 year after release watching I was not as impressed.  Tron receives a 3 star review.  I will rate upon acting and script, filming and enjoyability.

Avatar

Well hello again, we find ourselves together for another review yet once more.  Tonight we watched one of 2009's biggest films, Avatar.  I have held off as long as I could with this movie mainly due to all the hype that surrounded it.  I came into it very skeptical, because lets face it, a lot of times movies that get as much hype as this one turn out to not live up to it.  I wanted so badly to find a reason to not rate this movie 5 stars, that I had to sit and think after it was over.  What did I conclude?  Well, I rightfully could not rate one of the best movies of all time any less than 5 stars.  This may be a long one folks, buckle down and lets dive in.  I am going to rate on everything I can tonight, with some melting pot technique.  I will try not to get into too much storyline, as I will have plenty to talk about with out it.

Von Ryan's Express

This afternoon's movie is 1965's Von Ryan's Express with Frank Sinatra.  This movie was recommended to me by my father as I have had a recent love for WWII era movies.  I ended up rating this a 3 star, but it did border on a 2 star.  This may be a shorter blog this time, but lets look at acting, filming and script.

Answer Man

Tonight's movie is 2009's Answer Man with Jeff Daniels and Lauren Graham.  This movie has been on my instant view list for quite some time.  I have always been hesitant to watch it because of the description.  In said description, Jeff Daniels character Arlen Faber is in need of spiritual healing.  Now I have always been one to shy away from spiritual or religious movies, they have never struck my fancy.  Oh I know there are "religious" movies out there that are main stream that every one has seen and loves (such as the Da Vinci Code, Constantine or the un-obvious Matrix series for example) but for some reason the description just lead me to believe that there were other movies in my queue that would be better to watch at any given time.  Oh how I am sorry I did not watch this sooner.  For tonight's movie Answer Man, I am giving it a very solid 4 star rating.  In all actuality, it came damn close to a 5 star rating, however I was slightly disappointed in the ending.  Tonight I will be rating on acting combined with casting, storyline/script and enjoyability.

Bounty Hunter

Good Evening!  Tonight's review is 2010's Bounty Hunter staring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston.  The only reason I saw this movie is because it became available to view instant on Netflix.  Truthfully, I did not want to waste the space in my queue and I was hesitant to even watch it tonight.  It turned out to be pretty much what I expected, but it was entertaining.  For this I drug myself to give it a 3 star rating.  I will be covering acting, storyline, and enjoyability in tonight's review.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Good evening!  Tonight's review is Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.  The sequel to the 2006 film Night at the Museum was actually quite impressive.  With an extremely hard to improve upon original, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian did just that.  I am giving it a greatly deserved 4 star rating.  If you have not seen the first of the films, do so before seeing this one.

Blade:House of Chthon

Tonight the movie of choice was Blade:House of Chthon.  This movie was one I probably never would have saw if it had not come with the 4 film  package with the other 3 Blade movies.  Blade:House of Chthon receives a 2 star rating.

Blade Runner

The second review tonight is Blade Runner.  Blade runner gets a 1 star.

Lets dive in.  This movie was made back in 1982 and set in the year 2019.  The premise of this movie is Harrison Ford is a replica hunter.  A replica is a human like AI that, you guessed it, has gone rouge and can evolve.

The Fifth Element

Good evening!  Tonights first review is an older movie, The Fifth Element.  While it is not my first rodeo with this flick, it is one of my favorites, hence another go.

I am giving The Fifth Element a 4 star rating.  This movie does border on 5 stars, but since is just a border I am going with 4.  For me to give a 5 star review is very few and far between and must be well deserving.

Schindler's List

Hitler era movie number three.  Sorry, the first two were before the blog.  The first two were Valkyrie and Downfall, both excellent by the way.

On to the movie, eh? Once again, I am presently surprised by the movies portraying the Hitler era.  I will admit, finding time to watch a 3.5 hour movie can be tricky to do in one chunk, and it is after midnight but it was worth it.  I can not begin to describe the power in this movie, let alone the feelings it created.  I honestly can not believe that a horrendous event such as this was permitted to occur.  How could the rest of the world stand by and watch and do nothing while over 6 million Jews were murdered?  That my friends I have no answer.  What I do have an answer for is that this movie is well worth the very long 3.5 hours that it spans.

Core Purpose

Hello and welcome to my blog!  My core purpose is to write reviews for every movie I see for the next year.  While I don't intent for these reviews to be "critic" quality, I do hope you find some humor and relativity in them.  I have decided to limit my reviews to movies I WILL see is because there are way to many movies to choose from that I have already seen.

I do hope that you will follow along, as my reviews will become better and better as we go along.  You should expect to see around 5 movies reviews a week.  I am currently on a classic movie binge, but I do watch many other movies as well.  Recently I have watched movies such as Schindler's List, Hombre, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Messenger, Star Trek and a whole lot of Thomas and Friends (with my kids).  My netflix list has plenty of movies on it and is constantly growing, so don't expect a shortage of reviews anytime soon.

This is just a small sample of the movies that I have seen, and I will and plan to see all types of movies going forward.  I hope to give you a great deal of variety in the movies that I do see over the next year.  I will give you honest and thoughtful reviews that I hope you will enjoy. Please leave your posts, I would love to hear them!
