The Expendables

Well hello there, its been almost 2 weeks so lets have ourselves a review.  Tonight's film is 2010's The Expendables.  At first glance, it seems as if it would be a decent enough film, judging from the sheer amount of names listed on the cover alone.  Counting small roles, almost every action hero you can think of is in this movie.  The idea of the movie is decent, and some of the scenes were filmed amazingly.  All of these, however, do not compensate for the pure stupidity the film ended up being.  All in all, I have to give The Expendables a 2 star rating.  Lets look into acting with script, directing, filming and finally enjoyability.

Acting and script gets us started on quite a low point.  For the big names that were in this flick, I could not believe how horrible it turned out.  The general outline of The Expendables was decent.  A bunch of bad ass mercenaries take a trip to overthrow an out of control dictator.  Could be decent, right?  In my opinion it should have been.  This had so much going for it, I don't fully know where it went wrong.  Dialog was horrible, interactions were not thought out very well, and scenes jumped back and forth leaving you wondering what was going on.

This leads us into directing, which I believe was the problem.  Sly's directing is not what it used to be.  I have never thought he was that great of a director, but this film really does not help.  Perhaps he was just too much into the film.  Sly wrote, directed and starred.  Enough with directing, I'm too fed up with this to even attack it any more, filming is what saved this movie.  Special effects were some of the best I have seen in an action flick like this in a while.  I was very impressed with the realism during the fight scenes.  Hand to hand combat resulted in realistic broken body parts, while gun fights caused amazing blood splatters.  The fight scenes seemed realistic.  They were pushed to their limits, but did not turn out fake.  Although there were a lot of explosions in the film, most of them were just.  There were a few at the end of the film where a guard tower exploded due to being shot by a shotgun.  I'm not sure how realistic that really is.

Enjoyability was decent.  If you enjoy this type of film, it is worth checking out.  I ended up rating it two stars because of the ridiculous script and character interactions, but it is an action flick and does that fairly well.

Well, the ball has just dropped and we were forced to watch a horrible video from Maria Carey.  On that note, please follow my blog above, leave comments below, and share with your favorite social networking site.  Ciao for now, and see you for the next review!
