Chaos Theory (2008)

Well hello again!  This edition is reviewing 2008's Chaos Theory with Ryan Reynolds and Emily Mortimer.  Another strange role for Reynolds to play, Chaos Theory was quite a refreshing turn from a lot of the current films out there.  I am giving this flick a 4 star rating.  Rating will be based on acting, script and enjoyability.

Acting is our first category.  I thought that this film echoed Reynolds acting in the 2008 film The Nines.  Both of these films lead characters were quite a weird role to play, and Reynolds pulled them both off beautifully.  His acting gives him the ability to pull off weird rolls such as these two films, where a lot of other actors may not fit and flow as well.  Emily Mortimer and Stuart Townsend both acted incredible supporting rolls.  The chemistry between the three of them seemed as if they had always been life long friends, and just had fun acting together.  Ryan was able to pull off the 'OCD' of his character Frank Allen with complete believability.  All three of them were able to pull off three different age ranges quite nicely also.  The film spanned from 20 somethings, to 30 somethings and ended up at 50 somethings.  Each age range was acted different, and I am impressed at how well executed it was to have all three age ranges in all three main characters in the same movie.

Script was good.  I enjoyed the jump, with the beginning and the end in the same time frame, and the middle spanning young to middle aged adult hood.  The script pulled me in on this one.  I was engrossed.  Although it was not an edge of your seat thriller, or even an incredible suspense I was stuck the whole time.  It was done nicely without too many things happening at once, but it had enough so you didn't feel as if you were skimped on.  Dialog and interactions were amazing and nailed down, you don't second guess anything that happens as it is all believable.  Reynolds character Frank Allen's twist in the middle of the film catches you by total surprise (don't worry, it still will) and puts a new spin on the film.

Enjoyability was solid as previously mentioned in both categories so far.  My attention was captured the entire film, unlike a few of the last movies I have watched.  Acting and script were both entertaining.  The story was good, and the ending just sealed everything up.  If you like querkie movies, I would highly recommend Chaos Theory.
