The Vanishing (1993)

Well it is another familiar story tonight in that we are out of new movies on the instant queue.  Tonight we decided to watch The Vanishing, a remake of the 1988 Netherlands film of the same title.  The Vanishing stars Kiefer Sutherland, Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock and Nancy Travis.

Acting was done pretty well most of the way around.  My exception here is Bridges.  Jeff sure has a huge rap sheet of films he has been in over his life, surprising to me for how horrible of an actor he started out as.  I am glad he got the breaks he did however, as a few of my favorite characters would not be the same without his now days superb ability to act.  Sutherland, Bullock and Travis all did well.  I think they too have all matured in their acting abilities, but none were as far fetched in this film as Bridges was.

The story here was ho-hum for the most part.  There were good scenes and not so good scenes throughout, but the closer we got to the end the better and better the film became.  The ending is a huge surprise, and looking back I can only remember one instance of foreshadowing.  This catch was probably the best written and executed part of the entire film, well, besides the last scene that we see Bridges character in.

Music is another thing I felt was a bit out of place.  The opening itself was just weird.  The music in the middle was alright for the most part, but then again at the end while the credits were rolling the music was a bad choice.  Speaking of the end, the very last scene was a bit useless in my opinion.  I felt they could have just left the movie end the night before and it would have been much better.

Overall the film has some good suspense at the end with some good twists and turns.  Acting is decent and the film is worth seeing.  I am giving The Vanishing a 3 star rating.  Check it out if you are like us and out of films in your view instant queue!  Ciao for now and see you for the next review!
