Having heard good things about this sequel to the original (well, a remade original that is) we decided to give it a chance. The chipmunks are back and this time they have competition in the chipettes. Jason Lee returns and Zachary Levi joins the cast.
Lee's performance is very limited in this sequel, which was a disappointment to me. Lee's replacement as main character comes in Levi's position. I did enjoy what Levi brought to the table. Lee is a hard person to replace as his quirkyness is tough to match. I felt Levi did a great job doing just that. The only other major characters in the film were returning character Ian played by David Cross, and a new character played by Wendie Malick. Cross was annoying as usual, although that is the way his character is supposed to be. Malick did an amazing job, switching back and forth from stern to hidden fan and back again.
The singing in the film was actually not that great, but when you think of it in terms of it is supposed to be chipmunks singing well then its pretty damn good...because chipmunks cant sing. Get it? Ok we can move on now.
My favorite part was near the end when Levi's character sings, watch it and find out! Compared to the original in this duet, the first wins hands down. The Squeakuel is not a bad film relatively speaking however. It does what it sets out to accomplish, and that is be a good wholesome down to earth family film.
If that is what you are in the mood for, check this bad boy out and get ready for some high pitched singing! I am giving the Squeakuel a 3 star rating. Ciao for now and see you for the next review!
