The Green Hornet (2011)

One of Seth Rogen's latest creations, The Green Hornet is tonights review.  This film has good and bad about it, reminiscent of most of Rogen's films.  Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Tom Wilkinson and Edward James Olmos star in the film as well.

There was some good acting in this film, most of which was not done by Rogen and Diaz.  I have never seen Jay Chou in anything before, so I was unsure if that is how he talks or if he was doing it as part of the character.  His fight sequences were amazing however.  Tom Wilkinson and Edward James Olmos performed great as usual.  Rogen as the lead really gave this film a different feel altogether than if it were to have a serious non-comedy actor.  It seemed to work decent enough, but then again we will have no idea what it would have been like the other way.

The movie had a revolving door effect on me.  In the beginning, it started out pretty decent.  Then it decided to keep building way to long.  Once the build up was complete and the story really got going it was good again.  Then we started to just get ridiculous for awhile.  The film made another rebound only to have a ridiculously stupid ending after a very out of place animated sequence.  I think they could have left it with what I thought was the ending when Kato drives away after escaping the police once again.

Special effects were 95% amazing, and 5% stupid.  It wasn't so much the special effects in that 5%, it was more the story line that made the effects have to be stupid.  Weapon concepts were really cool, usage seemed believable and well timed.  Damage seemed realistic as well.

Story line is where we get some conflict here.  Most of the film was really good, but there were parts that really just went off the stupid meter and were exaggerated way further than they needed to be to be funny.  The movie was interesting and did keep my attention however, so interpret that however you may.

The concept of the film made sense, story line was decent for the most part, stunning visual effects and a mostly well acted cast give The Green Hornet a 3 star rating.  If you are in the mood for a good mashup of a comedy and a super hero movie it is worth checking out.  Ciao for now and see you for the next review!

  1. I felt much the same way. When Rogan first entered the acting scene he was kind of a breath of fresh air and I really liked him. Now, however, I kind of find myself trying to ignore his Rogan-ness just to watch the movie. Kind of like I need to ignore the Vince Vaughn rant in every movie he's in.
