Defiance (2008)

2008's Defiance was another movie in my Hitler kick area.  Although it was not added to my queue for this reason, it fit perfectly.  The movie takes place during Hitler Germany while a group of non violent jews flea to the forest and try to survive the constant attacks.  Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber lead the cast.

Defiance is based upon a true story.  Daniel and Liev led a well acted film.  The storyline and script delivered a believable movie, and acting seemed accurate for the area from what I have seen.  The filming of the movie is what really gets you here.  The way they were able to beautify the horrible conditions the refugees were living in was incredible.  They made a horrible situation look amazing by highlighting the beauty of nature around the negative.  Trees covered in snow during winter, the sun coming out and melting the snow in the spring, and so on.

I was really impressed with how the group was able to use what little they had to their full extent.  They cut down trees and made log houses.  They covered them in dirt, more logs and leaves and grass to make roofs.  They also only took from people in villages that could still survive with less.  The group was very civil and domestic for the situation they were in, and for the little belongings they actually had.  3 unimaginably long years the group lived in the forest constantly on the defense.

For those of you that enjoy following my Hitler kick with me, don't worry...I've got a few more in store for you as well.  Defiance was an unexpected, yet enjoyed find in my journey.  The fight scenes were amazingly detailed, proportionately graphic, utterly realistic and well shot.  The only thing I noticed here was some of the shotgun shells looked as if they should not have been invented yet back in the early 1940's.

My only real criticism in this film was even though it was over 2 hours long, a good chunk of the scene transitions felt jumpy.  Time would jump to months later at some of the transitions, leaving you wondering what happened.  I am giving Defiance a 4 star rating.  Acting, script, directing, filming and historical value were all good.
