Bridesmaids (2011)

After being repeatedly bombarded with ads and trailers and posters for Bridesmaids, I decided to get it from Redbox tonight.  Bridesmaids is hyped up to be the power chick flick of quite some time so I had my hopes up.  Bridesmaids had a pretty good cast including Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper and a slew of others.  Bridesmaids has a huge cast and all have their part.

Let's dive right in.  There were multiple parts in this film where I almost got up and left the room.  Most of them in the first half.  The tension built between Wiig and Byrne's characters was completely over the top.  Some of this was needed to bring the film the direction it went, but c'mon...seriously?  Both Wiig and Byrne acted this tension extremely well, but it was just excruciating to watch.

The only thing that kept me going off of these scenes was the relationship building between Wiig's character and the cop.  Megan and air marshall Jon were a fantastic addition to the film as well.  Fun fact for you; they are married in real life.

The concept of the film was decent enough.  Bridesmaids takes chick flicks to a new level which was fun and interesting.  Beyond that, the two non-focused on relationships saved the film.  Wow, ok then.  Let's wrap this up and put a 2 star stamp on this one and call it a night.  Ciao for now and see you for the next review!

  1. No need for me to post since we talked about this IRL, but I disagree with your last two reviews. I didn't think that Bridesmaids was the super funny movie of the year like all the previews claim it is. Actually, I didn't laugh much at all. But I do think that it was pretty good as far as chick flicks go. The tension between the main characters was a bit over the top, but over the top seems to be the trend in comedy right now. You've commented on it before with the Meet the Parents type movies. But the rest of the movie was pretty good. The interactions and happenings were pretty true-on, and I felt it captured girl bitchy-ness pretty well. The romances were cute and awkward but not cheesy. Most of the acting in the film was fine also.

Compare that with Whip It where I felt the acting was just stupid, as in the actors weren't very good at acting, and the script was just kind of stupid. The awkward romantic relationships were too cheesy (the long pauses between the two young lovers, etc). And while that may have been Drew Barrymore's best performance since ET, it still fricken sucked. Kristen Wiig and Daniel Stern gave good performances though. And while Marcia Gay Harden did a good job also, I feel like I've seen her in that role many times before, as in I could have been watching a different movie and it wouldn't have mattered. I would say that Whip It would be a movie that more of a young crowd would like, kind of like Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (which also was a shitty movie).

So, coming from a chick, I would be inclined to say that as far as Chick Flicks go, Bridesmaids is a solid 4 and Whip It a 2. Not that you want my opinions on your blog anyway though. ;)
