The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)

As promised, albeit quite awhile ago, here is the review for The Sorcerer's Apprentice.  For a movie about magic, I was impressed.  I thought the previews always looked good, but you never know what piles of garbage they can make look amazing with some editing into a 30 second spot.

I was a bit nervous as to how Jay Baruchel would do in such a serious leading role as this, but he turned out quite well.  The leading cast was also including Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer and Monica Bellucci.  The most surprising of the group has to be Teresa.  Teresa's first acting experience ever came just 6 years ago when she was cast off the street.  6 years and some insane luck later here she is co-leading a major Disney film.

Speaking of Disney films, The Sorcerer's Apprentice had some major deja vu moments.  The filming, script and music all reminded me at times of the record breaking Pirates of the Caribbean series.  I also love Jack Sparrow and Balthazar's costumes, they both seemed very similar yet geared to each respective film.  Another eerie similarity falls with the film Fantasia, with the premise of it being brought into The Sorcerer's Apprentice on purpose.

Special effects, huh?  I was amazed!  My biggest amazement was that they kept it believable (well as believable as sorcery is to us unknowing folk).  The spells were not so elaborate, or fake looking, as to make you question the credibility.  There was enough action to keep you entertained at the same time.  Even though the film was highly predictable, the anticipation kept you on the edge of your seat biting your nails waiting for the next thing to happen.

*mild spoilers*

My only quarrel with the film was the way it was ended for two reasons.  I was not happy when Teresa's character answered Jay's characters question after he told her not too.  That just seemed unnecessary and tacky.  The second unlikable event was after the credits Disney put in yet another Pirates similarity with the creepy unrevealing open ending leading you to believe there will be a sequel.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is receiving a 4 star rating from my all knowing, all powerful blog.  Be careful if you do not agree, for I will have to cast a spell upon you!  In all seriousness however please leave comments, click up above to follow my blog and share to your favorite social networking site below.  Ciao for now and see you for the next review!
