King Kong (2005)

Tonights film brings us back a few years, but none the less a movie I wanted to see.  King Kong stars Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody.  A classic tale about a giant terrorizing ape told with amazing special effects.  Strap in and hold on, your in for one wild, and often times unbelievable, ride.

The first half hour of this OVERLY drawn out terribly long 3 hour movie had lost my attention already.  It was redeemed thankfully or I may not have even finished.  The beginning was terribly ridiculous and overacted.  Jack Black brought something to this film that very few others could, but the first half hour was almost too much JB for me to take.  Adding to that was the horrible Colin Hanks.  I'm pretty sure I have not liked him in a single thing I have seen of his.  His acting is so bland that I see more action out of my lethargic pet iguana Godzilla.

On the upside of acting, JB brought out his unique abilities further into the film.  Naomi Watts did an amazing job, as did Adrien Brody.  Brody has really done some amazing roles in the last 5 or 6 years.

The best part of the film had to be hands down the special effects.  In-fing-credible.  Animated animals and bugs were extremely realistic, scenes and backdrops were flawless and set design was amazing.  Without the special effects, a few well known names and a few good performances, this movie would have been complete garbage.

Now to the often times unbelievable part of the teaser paragraph.  Its a bit of a spoiler, but nothing that effects the outcome of the film.  JB's character wants to go to an uncharted island to film his next big movie and finds out on the way there that it is inhabited by a giant monster, who they find later to be Kong.  Wait, that is not the unbelievable part.  Besides Kong, this island is inhabited by a violent native tribe, dinosaurs and giant versions of things we have in real life such as bats, crocodiles and a whole slew of bugs.  The use of guns in this film was totally unrealistic (in a rhino voice).

The bugs were the worst part of the entire film.  Coming in a close second would be all the questions the film left unanswered.  There are too many to list here, but if you have watched it (or do watch it) you will understand what I am talking about.  All of the unnecessary fluff and useless junk that was kept in the final cut was quite annoying as well.  I think with some editing the film could have been cut down to closer to 2 hours, at least 2 and a half.

My favorite feature of the script was the fact that you start to develop feelings for Kong early on in the film when he starts to protect Watts' character.  Those feelings deepen as you see her start to care about him and watch their relationship develop as everyone else is just trying to kill him.  By the end of the film you feel as strongly about Kong as Watts does and you'll feel horrible for Kong while he is chained on stage, and be rooting for Kong to catch the fighter jets in the last scene.

Well, a long review for a long movie but there you have it.  I am giving 2005's King Kong a 3 star review.  Amazing special effects and the relationship built between Watts and Kong saved the film.
